40% Recycled

Hot Tub Recycling Denver — What Happens to Your Old Spa

Quick Answer: About 40% of a hot tub's materials can be recycled — motors, pumps, heaters, wiring, and metal frames go to scrap recyclers. The acrylic/fiberglass shell is the hardest part to recycle and currently goes to licensed disposal. Junk Same Day separates all recyclable components during dismantling. Call (303) 324-6014.

The Recycling Breakdown

Motors & Pumps

15-20 lbs of recyclable copper and steel per tub

Wiring

5-10 lbs of copper wire recovered

Metal Frame

30-50 lbs of recyclable steel

Heater & Electronics

5-10 lbs of mixed metals recovered

Shell

200-400 lbs — disposal (no viable recycling yet)

Foam & Cover

50-100 lbs — disposal

Total recyclable: approximately 55-90 lbs of metal per hot tub (about 40% by component count). The shell is the heaviest single component and currently the hardest to recycle.

We separate every recyclable component during dismantling.

Why Hot Tub Shells Are Hard to Recycle

Hot tub shells are made of thermoset acrylic bonded to fiberglass — a composite material that can't be melted down and reformed like metal or thermoplastic. Current recycling technology doesn't have a cost-effective way to separate the acrylic from the fiberglass backing.

Some companies are experimenting with grinding shells into aggregate for construction fill, but this isn't widely available in Denver yet. We're actively monitoring developments in composite recycling and will adopt better solutions as they become commercially viable.

What we do instead: We ensure shells go to licensed disposal facilities — not illegal dump sites. And we maximize recycling of every other component to minimize the overall environmental impact.

DIY Recycling vs. Professional

If you remove your hot tub yourself and take it to the Denver dump, 100% goes to landfill — the dump doesn't separate components. When JSD removes your hot tub, we separate recyclable components during dismantling before anything goes to disposal. That's the difference between 0% and 40% recycling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a hot tub be fully recycled?
Not yet. About 40% of components (motors, pumps, wiring, metal frames) are recyclable. The acrylic/fiberglass shell — the largest component — doesn't have a viable recycling pathway in Colorado currently. We recycle everything we can and dispose of the rest at licensed facilities.
Is there scrap value in an old hot tub?
The copper in motors, pumps, wiring, and heaters has scrap value — typically $10-$30 worth per tub at current copper prices. Not enough to offset removal costs, but enough that scrap recyclers accept the components. The shell and foam have no scrap value.
Can I recycle my hot tub myself in Denver?
You can take separated metal components (motor, pump, wiring) to a scrap recycler like SA Recycling or Schnitzer Steel in Denver for cash payment. The shell and foam would need to go to a transfer station. The challenge is the labor of dismantling and separating — which is exactly what our crew does during removal.
Do you charge extra for recycling?
No. Recycling is built into our standard removal process. We separate components during dismantling regardless — it doesn't add time or cost. You pay the same price whether components are recycled or not.
What about the hot tub water chemicals?
Standard hot tub water (chlorine/bromine) is safe to drain on your lawn in residential quantities. Let chemical levels dissipate 24 hours before draining. The water itself isn't a recycling concern — it's the physical materials that matter.
Can a working hot tub be donated instead of recycled?
Working hot tubs are best sold or given away (Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist). Denver charities generally don't accept hot tubs due to installation requirements, liability, and the cost of moving them. If yours works but won't sell, we'll still recycle the components during removal.
