How to Get a Couch or Mattress Down a Capitol Hill Walk-Up

Capitol Hill’s historic walk-ups are gorgeous — until you’re trying to wrestle a couch down a narrow staircase that turns twice and has a landing the size of a bath mat. Heavy, awkward items are the single hardest part of moving out of Cap Hill. Here’s how to do it safely.
Before you lift anything: measure and plan
- Measure the tight spots — the narrowest stair width, the landing turns, and every doorway. Then measure the item. A sofa often has to go diagonally or vertically to make a turn.

- “Hook” it around corners — stand the couch on end and pivot it up-and-around the turn rather than forcing it flat.
- Sleeper sofas are the beast. The steel fold-out frame makes them brutally heavy and rigid. If it’s a sleeper on a third-floor walk-up, seriously consider not doing it yourself.
Old Cap Hill staircases are steep, sometimes uneven, and often the only way out. A dropped sofa or a slip on a turn is how people get hurt and how walls, banisters, and deposits get destroyed. If the item is heavy, the stairs are tight, or it’s just you — that’s the call to bring in a crew.
