Why Exercise Equipment Is So Hard to Get Rid Of
- Weight: A standard treadmill weighs 200-300 lbs. A loaded Smith machine can hit 600 lbs. These aren’t items you carry solo.
- Stairs: Most Denver home gyms are in the basement. Getting a 250-lb treadmill up a narrow flight of stairs requires technique, strength, and at least two experienced movers.
- Disassembly: Home gyms, power racks, and cable machines often need partial disassembly to fit through doorways and up stairwells.
- No resale value: Used treadmills and ellipticals have almost zero resale value unless they’re less than 2 years old and high-end brands (Peloton, NordicTrack Commercial, etc.).
- Too heavy for the trash: None of these fit in a trash bin or dumpster. Even if they did, the weight would exceed limits.
Can You Sell Used Exercise Equipment?
Maybe. Here’s what actually sells vs. what doesn’t:
Sells (if less than 3 years old):
- Peloton bikes: $500-$1,000
- NordicTrack/ProForm (commercial models): $200-$500
- Adjustable dumbbell sets (Bowflex, PowerBlock): $100-$300
- Rogue/Rep Fitness power racks and plates: Hold value well
Doesn’t sell (or sells for almost nothing):
- Generic treadmills over 3 years old: $0-$50
- Older ellipticals: $0-$25
- Total Gym, Bowflex older models: $0-$25
- Broken or non-functioning equipment: $0
Post high-value items on Facebook Marketplace. For everything else, the cost of your time trying to sell a $25 treadmill isn’t worth it — just schedule removal.
Can You Donate Exercise Equipment?
Some Denver organizations accept working equipment:
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore — Accepts some fitness equipment in good working condition
- ARC Thrift Stores — May accept smaller pieces (bikes, benches)
- Local gyms and community centers — Some accept donated commercial-quality equipment
Most donation centers will not accept treadmills or large cardio machines due to weight, space, and liability concerns. If it’s not in working condition, donation isn’t an option.
