What We Can’t Take (Hazardous Materials)
Federal and state law prohibits junk removal companies from transporting hazardous materials. These items require specialized disposal:
Chemicals and Liquids
- Liquid paint — Take to a PaintCare drop-off site (free)
- Paint thinner, mineral spirits, solvents — Denver hazardous waste events
- Motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze — Auto parts stores (AutoZone, O’Reilly) accept for free
- Pesticides, herbicides, insecticides — Denver hazardous waste events
- Pool chemicals (chlorine, muriatic acid) — Hazardous waste events
- Cleaning chemicals (bleach, ammonia, drain cleaner) — Hazardous waste events
Pressurized Containers
- Propane tanks — Exchange at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart (Blue Rhino/AmeriGas programs)
- Aerosol cans (partially full) — Hazardous waste events. Completely empty cans are fine in recycling.
- Fire extinguishers — Fire departments or hazardous waste events
- Compressed gas cylinders — Return to the gas supplier
Biological and Medical
- Medical waste (sharps, needles) — Pharmacies (Walgreens, CVS), hospitals, or mail-back programs
- Medications — Denver police station drop boxes, pharmacy take-back programs, or DEA take-back events
- Asbestos-containing materials — Requires licensed asbestos abatement contractor
Other Prohibited Items
- Ammunition and explosives — Contact Denver Police non-emergency line
- Firearms — Denver PD accepts surrendered firearms
- Radioactive materials (old smoke detectors contain small amounts — these go in regular trash per the EPA)
- Large quantities of contaminated soil — Requires environmental remediation

The Gray Area: Items We Handle With Special Procedures
These items aren’t hazardous but require special handling:
- Refrigerators/freezers — We take them, but Freon must be properly recovered per the Clean Air Act. We ensure compliance.
- Bed bug-infested furniture — We take it with proper precautions. Let us know in advance.
- Water-damaged/moldy items — We take them. Our crew uses appropriate PPE.
- Tires — We take passenger vehicle tires. Commercial truck tires and large quantities may have additional fees.
- Concrete and brick — Weight-based pricing instead of volume-based.
