7 Ways to Get Rid of a Couch in Denver
Your old couch needs to go — it’s sagging, stained, or you just bought a new one from AFW (who won’t take it back, by the way). But couches don’t fit in the trash bin, and you can’t exactly carry one to the curb solo. Here are all your options, from free to fastest.
1. Donate It (Free — If It’s in Good Shape)
If your couch is clean, structurally sound, and doesn’t smell, several Denver organizations will pick it up for free:
- ARC Thrift Stores — Free pickup; schedule online or by phone. Accepts couches, loveseats, and sectionals in good condition.
- Salvation Army — Free pickup available in most Denver zip codes. Call to schedule; expect 5-10 day wait.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore — Multiple Denver metro locations. Free pickup for large furniture donations.
- Denver Rescue Mission — Accepts clean, usable furniture.
See our full Denver donation center guide for hours, locations, and what each accepts.
They will NOT accept: Couches with stains, tears, pet damage, odors, bed bugs, broken frames, or missing cushions. If your couch wouldn’t pass the "would a friend sit on this?" test, donation isn’t an option.
2. Sell It ($0-$200 Income)
Couches in decent shape sell on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and OfferUp. Realistic Denver pricing:
- Standard sofa: $50-$150
- Sectional: $100-$300
- Loveseat: $25-$75
- Reclining sofa: $75-$200
Tip: Price it 50% below what you think it’s worth. Overpriced couches sit for weeks. If you need it gone fast, list it as "free — must pick up today" and it’ll vanish within hours.
3. Give It Away (Free)
Post it on:
- Facebook Marketplace — List as free, first come first served
- Craigslist “Free” section — Denver/Boulder section gets heavy traffic
- Buy Nothing groups — Hyperlocal Denver neighborhood groups on Facebook
- Nextdoor — Post to your neighborhood feed
Free couches in Denver go within hours if you post a photo and mark "porch pickup" or "curb alert."
4. Denver Large Item Pickup (Free — But Slow)
The City of Denver offers free large item pickup on a 9-week rotating schedule. You can set out up to 4 large items including couches.
Pros: Free.
Cons: You might wait 2-8 weeks. You must carry the couch to the curb yourself. If it rains before pickup day, your couch becomes a soggy neighborhood eyesore.
5. Haul It to the Dump Yourself ($30-$60)
If you have a truck or can borrow one:
- Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site — 5500 Quebec St, Denver
- Tower Road Transfer Station — 9900 Tower Rd, Commerce City
Fees: $30-$60 per load. You’ll also need someone to help you carry the couch — most couches require two people.
6. Hire a Junk Removal Service ($99 — Fastest Option)
This is the "I want it gone today" option. At Junk Same Day, couch removal starts at $99 and includes:
- We come inside your home and carry it out (stairs, tight hallways, elevators — no problem)
- Same-day pickup in most cases
- We donate usable couches through our GreenHaul™ program
- Non-donatable couches are disposed of responsibly
Removing a couch plus other items? Adding a loveseat, end table, or bags of junk to a couch removal barely changes the price. See our full furniture pricing.
7. Put It on the Curb With a “Free” Sign (Risky)
This works sometimes in Denver neighborhoods with foot traffic (Capitol Hill, Baker, Highlands, Five Points). But:
- If nobody takes it within 24 hours, you’re responsible for removal
- It may violate Denver ordinances — leaving furniture on the curb or in the alley is technically illegal and can result in fines up to $999
- Rain and sprinklers will destroy it overnight
- If you’re in an HOA, this is an almost guaranteed violation and fine
What If My Couch Won’t Fit Through the Door?
This happens more than you’d think — especially with sectionals in basement apartments and older Denver homes with narrow doorways. Options:
- Remove the legs and cushions — This alone gains 4-6 inches
- Remove the door from its hinges — Quick, gains 2 inches
- Tilt and pivot — The classic L-shaped hallway maneuver
- Cut it — As a last resort, we can cut a couch in half with a reciprocating saw to get it out. Yes, we’ve done this many times.
How Much Does Couch Removal Cost in Denver?
- Single couch or loveseat: $99
- Couch + loveseat combo: $99-$129
- Large sectional: $129-$149
- Couch + other items (mattress, table, etc.): $129-$199
