Every appliance has its own rules, recyclable parts, and gotchas. Here's the straight answer for each — whether you DIY it or have us haul it.
How to dispose of a refrigerator or freezer
A refrigerator or freezer cannot legally be scrapped or landfilled until its refrigerant (Freon) is recovered by an EPA-certified technician — venting it is a federal violation under Clean Air Act Section 608. Units made before ~2010 often hold ozone-depleting R-12 or R-134a, and the foam insulation traps more blowing agent. A fridge is roughly 120–140 lbs of recyclable steel, copper, and aluminum. Your options: Xcel's rebate program (working units only), a scrapper (working, at the curb, metal-only), or full-service pickup from $95 — we recover the refrigerant and recycle the metal. Denver curbside trash will not take it.
How to dispose of a washer or dryer
Washers and dryers have no refrigerant, so they're simpler — and valuable as scrap (heavy steel drums and copper motors). Disconnect the water supply and drain hoses (washer) or the vent duct (dryer) first. A working set can be donated to Habitat for Humanity ReStore; a dead one goes to a metal recycler. How to dispose of a dishwasher
A built-in dishwasher must be disconnected from the water supply, drain line, and power, then unbolted from under the counter. The stainless or steel body and the motor are recyclable, but curbside trash won't take a built-in unit. We pull it from the cabinet, disconnect it, and recycle it.
How to dispose of a stove, oven, or range
Electric ranges simply unplug from the 240V outlet; gas ranges must be shut off at the valve first (have a pro cap the line if it's hardwired). The steel body and cast-iron grates are recyclable, and a working range can be donated. We take electric or gas, any condition.

Appliances aren't ordinary trash. Here's what federal and Colorado rules actually require — and how we stay compliant on every job.
Refrigerant must be professionally recovered (federal law)
Under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, it is illegal to knowingly release refrigerant from a refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, or dehumidifier during disposal. The refrigerant must be recovered by an EPA-certified technician before the unit is recycled or scrapped — we do this on every applicable unit.
Colorado bans electronics — not appliances — from landfills
Colorado's Electronic Recycling Jobs Act keeps TVs, computers, and other electronics out of landfills. Large appliances aren't landfill-banned statewide, but the Section 608 refrigerant rule still applies to anything with a compressor, and Denver-area transfer stations generally require proof the refrigerant was removed. Microwaves count as electronics and should be recycled, not trashed.
Older units can contain mercury and PCBs
Per the EPA's Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) program, some older appliances contain mercury switches or relays and — in units built before 1979 — PCB-containing capacitors, plus ozone-depleting foam blowing agents.
