History

Established in 1942 as an Army post, the base honors Lt. John Buckley, a Colorado native who fell in WWI. It trained B-17 and B-24 bomber crews and later became an auxiliary field for Lowry Air Force Base in 1946, evolving through the Cold War into today’s modern installation.

Buckley hosts the 460th Space Wing and numerous tenant units focused on surveillance, space communications, and missile warning systems. It also supports the Colorado Army National Guard and Colorado Air National Guard.
