Where to Recycle Electronics in Denver
Old TVs, computers, and phones don’t belong in the trash. Here’s where to take them in Denver.
Why Electronics Need Special Recycling
E-waste contains hazardous materials that don’t belong in a landfill.
Electronics aren’t like regular trash. They contain materials that are harmful to the environment and human health when they end up in landfills:
- Lead — found in CRT televisions and older monitors. A single CRT can contain 4 to 8 pounds of lead.
- Mercury — present in flat-screen displays, switches, and thermostats.
- Lithium batteries — found in laptops, phones, and tablets. Can cause landfill fires when crushed or punctured.
- Cadmium, chromium, and brominated flame retardants — found in circuit boards and plastic housings.
When these materials leach into the soil and groundwater, they contaminate drinking water and ecosystems. Colorado law encourages proper e-waste disposal, and many municipalities have restrictions on putting electronics in the regular trash.
The good news: almost every component of an electronic device can be recovered and reused. Recycling keeps hazardous materials out of landfills and recovers valuable metals like gold, copper, and aluminum.

Denver E-Waste Collection Events
The City of Denver sponsors free collection events throughout the year.
Denver and surrounding municipalities host periodic e-waste collection events, typically in spring and fall. These events are free for residents and accept a wide range of electronics that might otherwise be hard to dispose of.
What to expect at collection events:
- Drive-through drop-off — stay in your car, volunteers unload for you
- Accepts TVs (including CRTs), computers, monitors, printers, phones, and more
- Usually free for residents of the hosting city or county
- Events fill up fast — arrive early for the shortest wait times
Check denvergov.org for upcoming dates and locations. Arapahoe County, Jefferson County, and other surrounding areas also host their own events on separate schedules.

What About TVs and Monitors?
TVs are the trickiest electronics to recycle — especially the old ones.
⚠️ CRT TVs Are the Hardest to Recycle
Old tube-style (CRT) televisions contain 4–8 pounds of lead in the glass. Because of the hazardous material and the cost of processing, most recyclers charge $25–$35 per CRT TV. Some won’t accept them at all. Best Buy charges $29.99 per CRT unit.
Flat-screen TVs (LCD, LED, plasma) are accepted more widely and usually for free. Best Buy takes them at no charge, and most e-waste collection events accept them as well.
The real challenge with TV recycling isn’t the cost — it’s the logistics. A 65-inch flat screen or a 200-pound CRT doesn’t fit in most cars. That’s where we come in.
Junk Same Day picks up TVs and monitors of any size from your home. No wrestling it down the stairs, no renting a truck, no driving across town. We handle the heavy lifting and make sure it gets recycled properly.
